10 Things You Need to Know about the 2017 VISSLA ISA World Junior Surfing Championship

Here are the ten things you need to know about the upcoming competition:

1. The Olympics

With Olympic Surfing set to make its debut in Japan at the Tokyo 2020 Games, the 2017 VISSLA ISA World Junior Surfing Championship will serve as a precursor to the high-performance Surfing that will be experienced in 2020. The event, which has proven to be an indicator who will become the future stars of the sport, will provide a preview of the potential future Olympians who could represent their countries at the Games in three years’ time.

2. The Records

Riding the Olympic wave of momentum that has allowed Surfing to penetrate new non-traditional markets around the world, the 2016 edition of the event made history as the largest to date with 347 surfers from 39 countries. The 2017 edition is expected to exceed these numbers, featuring more than 40 nations and leading to another record-breaking edition of the event.

3. The Rise of Team Japan

Team Japan made history in the 2016 edition of the event, earning the overall Team Copper Medal, their first-ever ISA junior team medal. The Japanese will return four surfers from their 2016 squad with the aim to win another team medal for the local crowd in Japan.

4. Watch the Event Live

The ISA World Championship will be streamed live on www.isaworlds.com from September 23 – October 1. Visit the official event website for results, photos, videos and news pertaining to the competition.

Fans will also be able to watch the live webcast on the ISA’s Facebook page, International Surfing Association.

5. VISSLA – The Title Sponsor

This year’s competition marks the fourth consecutive year that VISSLA has supported the World Championship as the title sponsor, bringing their youthful, unique energy to the world’s largest junior surfing competition.

Vissla is a brand that represents creative freedom, a forward-thinking philosophy, and a generation of creators and innovators. They embrace the modern do-it-yourself attitude within surf culture, performance surfing, and craftsmanship. This is a surf-everything and ride-anything mentality.

6. The World Champions

The 2017 edition will feature two teams that are fielding two past ISA Junior World Champions each. Hawaii will bring Summer Macedo (2015) and Brissa Hennessy (2016) and France will bring Leo-Paul Etienne (2014) and Thomas Debierre (2016).

The 2016 Gold Medalists are as follows:
U16 Girls – Caroline Marks (USA)
U16 Boys – Thomas Debierre (FRA)
U18 Girls – Brisa Hennessy (HAW)
U18 Boys – Weslley Dantas (BRA)
ISA Aloha Cup – Hawaii
Team World Championship – France

7. The History

The 2017 VISSLA ISA World Surfing Junior Championship will be the first time the ISA has held an event in Japan in over 27 years. The last time an ISA World Championship took place in the ‘land of the rising sun’ was when the 1990 ISA World Surfing Games graced the shores of Miyazaki and Niijima featuring future stars of the sport such as Kelly Slater, Rob Machado, and Taylor Knox.

Historically, the ISA has served as a glimpse into the future stars of the sport. Past ISA World Junior Champions include the 2014 WSL Champion Gabriel Medina (BRA, 2010), Tatiana Weston-Webb (HAW, 2014, 2013), Filipe Toledo (BRA, 2011), Tyler Wright (AUS, 2010, 2009), Alejo Muniz (BRA, 2008), Laura Enever (AUS, 2008), Sally Fitzgibbons (AUS, 2007), Julian Wilson (AUS, 2006), Owen Wright (AUS, 2006), Stephanie Gilmore (AUS, 2005, 2004), Matt Wilkinson (AUS, 2004), Jordy Smith (RSA, 2003) and Leonardo Fioravanti (ITA, 2015).

Junior Series 2017 U14 event 1

By junior series No Comments

Congratulations to Tom Hook who took out the first of the under 14s Junior Series contests which was held at Vazon on Friday evening.

In what was a dominant display of progressive surfing, Tom showed his ever increasing skills in really fun 2-3 foot right handers and put on a display of mature surfing that was way beyond his years.
With the absence of Joseph Gaudion due to recently breaking his arm, Tom’s closest rival was was Ethan Norman who continues to improve, and managed to match Tom for the first half of the final where the wave scores were still close.
But then in the second half of the final, Tom put his foot down and showed his local knowledge by picking off the right waves that reeled beautifully and allowed him to rack up some impressive scores including what was the first ever 10 point ride in a Junior contests and backed up by an 8 point ride.
The surfing on display would have put him in good stead in the men’s open, so to see this in a junior competition was truly impressive.
Congratulations Tom and to all who took part.

U14 Event 1 – Results:

1st Tom Hook
2nd Ethan Norman
3rd Wil Montgomery
4th Molly Norman
5th Mya Gurney

Ed Cooper steals gold in the first of the under 10 junior series events held this weekend in ideal 1-2 feet waves at sunny Vazon.

Ed made the most of the conditions, which were perfect for the under 10’s, and with some notable absentees due to holidays, he was able to go on and take out the final in his first Junior Series contest.

In a new format we wanted to give recognition to the little ones that are finding their feet and progressing well with parental help, but also reward the kids that are able to get out there on their own and get waves, so for this we held a repechage final for those who didn’t make it through their first heat, and gave them the opportunity to surf again.

Congratulations to all who took part, and for those that weren’t able to make it, please remember that the leader board points at the end of the year are taken from the best 2 out of the 3 contests, so even if you missed this one, there’s still plenty of opportunities in the next comps.

U10 Full results below:

1st Ed Cooper
2nd Rueben Montgomery
3rd Emile Le Compte
4th Dylan Colley
5th Florrie Cooper
6th Seb Browning
7th Remie Le Compte
8th Indi Warren

Ripper’s Final
Ed Cooper
Reuben Montgomery
Emile Le Compte
Dylan Colley

Shredder’s Final

So the U10 leaderboard, going into event two as the competitors head to Tahiti, stands as…

News Release – on acceptance of the sport of Surfing to the Olympics Games 2020

Subject: British Surfing to participate in the Olympic Games 2020, Tokyo

9/8/16

NEWS RELEASE

Today, in Rio de Janeiro, it was announced that member nations of the Olympic Movement voted in favour of the inclusion of the sport of Surfing in the Olympic Games 2020 in Tokyo.  Surfing is one of five new sports to be included and provides a platform for British surfing to excel on the world stage.

In anticipation of this exciting decision the surfing Federations from across Britain, today, announce the signing of an agreement that forms the foundations for the future development of the sport across the British Islands and enabling a British Olympic Squad for 2020.

Within the British Islands the governing bodies for the sport of surfing consists of the Scottish Surfing Federation, the English Surfing Federation, the Welsh Surfing Federation and the Channel Islands Surfing Federation, each of which manage the sport in their own jurisdiction.

The Federations have gone from strength to strength; managing their own regional programmes and management of teams at British, European and World level.

The formation of British Surfing Union of Recognised Federations (‘BSURF’) unites the Federations to develop future British Squads. BSURF will create a framework outling how the governing bodies will come together to prepare, select and manage a future British team when required. The BSURF agreement offers each home nation a model for collaboration and mutual support.

“Surfing in the Channel Islands has grown from strength to strength over the years. Junior development in both Islands has increased with the view to not only maintain a presence at European Championship level but at International level as well. This announcement is excellent news for British Surfing and something that all Channel Island surfers can aspire to.”

“For the sport of surfing, these are very exciting times, and the surfing Federations now embark on a journey to build an effective strategy and development plan that will prepare British athletes for the world stage in readiness for the Olympic Games 2020”. says David Ferguson, President of the Channel Islands Surfing Federation.

Surfing GB becomes The English Surfing Federation

By General No Comments

After nearly two years of negotiations Surfing GB released the following statement today. The Channel Islands Surfing Federation has been recognised as a National Governing Body in its own right and as such are not tied to the decisions of The English Surfing Federation so it’s good news all round:

Dear Member,

We are writing today to inform you about some important changes to our National Governing Body (NGB) application and to proudly detail our plans going forward.

As you may know Surfing GB passed stage one of the two stage NGB application process in 2014. Since then we have been working with UK Sport, Sport England and the ISA (International Surfing Association) as well as the surfing federations of Scotland (SSF), Wales (WSF), the Channel Isles (CISF) and England (ESF) with the vision of establishing a British NGB for Surfing.

We can now report that the state of play has changed since we first set out. The Scottish and Welsh Surfing Federations, and that of the Channel Islands are now recognised in their home nation, by their respective Sports councils, as surfing NGBs. The federations of SSF, WSF and CISF are now ready and eager to govern the sport entirely within their areas, however English surfers and surfing remain unrecognised by Sport England.

With this in mind, and considering the best interests of the majority 82% English membership we serve of surfers, coaches, surf schools and surf clubs, the directors of Surfing GB have decided to focus our organisation and operations on England only as of 2017. To best achieve this we have spent recent months negotiating and working with the committee of the English Surfing Federation, and it is today that we proudly announce plans to merge our two organisations to achieve England ONLY NGB recognition for surfing. This decision has been made for the benefit and future of English Surfers and Surfing.

Sport England have supported this approach through advice and funding for the legal work, which will involve changes to our constitution, and the merger of our organisation with the English Surfing Federation (ESF). We plan to ratify the legal changes at a General meeting in October, and move to full England only NGB application during this coming winter.

Surfing GB will remain in full operation until the end of 2016 after which point the combined volunteer boards of Surfing GB and the ESF will then move forward together as an English surfing NGB.

How these changes will affect me as a member

1. English Surfers and Coaches will continue to receive the same support and NGB accreditation as before with no disruption to service:

the structure and service that has served you and managed your membership or accreditation will remain in place

the same team voluntary SGB directors, with additional volunteers from the ESF will lead the organisation

continued insurance and member benefits

the same professional administrative and managerial staff remain in place

continued ISA/NGB recognition, coaching programmes and accreditation

accreditation by an English/ ISA recognised NGB from 2017 onwards

2. Members in Scotland, Wales and the Channel Islands

As of January 2017 we will no longer be able to offer you new or renewed Accreditation or membership. Your membership will be valid until its stated expiry date.

As of January 2017 we will no longer be able to offer you ISA coaching programmes in Wales, Scotland and the Channel Isles

The Surfing GB directors would like to thank you all for your continued support. Together with our fantastic team of professional staff that run day to day NGB operations, we remain committed to ensuring that the NGB service that we have built over the last 5 years is a world class, modern and forward looking organisation.

It is with great sadness that we will soon have to say goodbye to our members, surf schools, surf clubs and coaches from Wales, Scotland and the Channel Islands, and we wish you all the very best of luck in your future in surfing.

We now look forward to a productive and exciting future, and for those English members that will continue to receive our service in future we are stoked that we will be able to offer you a more sharply focussed and targeted support than ever before.

For all administrative enquiries please continue to contact Nick Rees or Sally Lawton in the SGB office via email, and if any of you would like to speak to one of the volunteer directors about the changes we are planning then please feel free to get in touch.

Below are some FAQs for you and a copy of our general release.

We will publish this information publicly at 8:00am.

Yours Sincerely

The Surfing GB Directors
