Fun comp postponed

By Events, Local No Comments

Well mother nature might not have played ball today for the Autism Guernsey charity competition we had planned but the mouth watering array of boards from long ago was worth turning up for. We hope to run the event either next weekend or on the bank holiday after so keep your eyes on the Facebook feed for all the updates. There’s still time to get involved so get your team together and send your team details to [email protected] this week. The more teams the better and remember it’s strictly a fun event for Autism Guernsey so please get involved.

4 Divisions, One team member for each (although if you can only get a team of 3 together one surfer and do 2 divisions)
Finless
Longboard
Board shaped in Guernsey
Pre 90’s board

40 minute heat per division.

Enter The Cold Water Classic

By Events

The Inaugural Cold Water Classic will, conditions permitting, be held on the weekend of 28th/29th March and it represents the first of a series of new events that GSC will be running over the course of the year which will include The Summer Solstice Surf Session, The Breda Muratti, The Island Championships and the Summer Junior Series (comprising of three U18s comps at the end of which one series champ will be crowned.)

The Cold Water Classic will have only an Open and a Longboarding division in order to get through all the heats necessary, however we encourage surfers of ALL ages (and genders!) to enter and a prize will be given for the highest placing Junior Surfer. The presentations will be made at the beach directly after the completion of the event.

CWC-ENTER-BUTTON

Entries must be received by Wenesday 25th. Payment to be paid at on the day. Failure to do so will mean you will not be allowed to enter the competition, so the sooner you can get them in the better. Stay tuned to our Facebook page for more details as the event gets closer.

Jake in Morocco

By Travel No Comments

We got sent these photos of Jake Warr in Morocco recently by an Australian named Mark Denny who is currently living in Sweden, here was what he wrote: “Hi !! I met a guy from Guernsey last week in Taghazout, Morocco. I’ve attached a few photos in the link that I managed to get of him although they really don’t do him any justice at all. He was fearless all week. Taking off deep and late and absolutely ripping. I didn’t catch his name but remember that he said he was a plumber. Anyway, maybe you know him and if you do please send the link on to him.”

Good work Jakey and thanks for the pics Mark.

GSC Meeting 19/02/15

By General No Comments

As many of you may be aware Jersey Surf Club have made some phenomenal strides over the past few years in restructuring and developing junior talent to represent their island at the European Championships.

The GSC has been working closely with the JSC over the past few months in order to learn from their successes (and failures) so that we can build a similar structure going forward to benefit our members.

GSC is currently working towards this more structured set up so it’s members can not only enjoy the current benefits of insurance but also have the opportunity to take part in more competitions both locally, inter-island and eventually further afield, (with a particular focus on the juniors) not to mention more regular and better notified social events.

With this in mind we will be holding an Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM) on February 19th where we invite anyone who wishes to get involved in the club to attend. Here hopefully everyone can air their opinions and ideas and help appoint people to the relevant roles so that some of this can be implemented.

Obviously we have to be realistic about what we can achieve and how quickly we can do it but for 2015 we are proposing something along the lines of the competition schedule below, with the focus being the creation of the Junior Series over the summer months to encourage talent at this level:

28/29 March

Cold Water Classic (Open and Longboard)

Prize for highest scoring U18/furthest into the comp U18.

23/24/25th May Watersplash

Channel Island Championships

6/7 June

Summer Solstice Surf Session (Open and Longboard)

Prize for highest scoring U18/furthest into the comp U18.

20 June WATERSPLASH

Breda Muratti

July/August/September

Junior Series – COMPRISES 3 COMPETITIONS  (U14, U16, U18 divisions (girls too)

Points given in each division for 1st to 4th

Overall winner is one with highest points tally after Comp No 3.

Late September (perhaps 19/20 or 26/27)

Island Champs 2015 (All divisions)

End of November/Early December

Presentation evening

Dinner/dance with prize giving at the same time

None of this is fixed in stone but hopefully after the EGM we can get enough people in the relevant roles to help make them a reality and create more opportunities for local surfers to compete and socialise. We want to hear your thoughts and we need your help. So please come along on to the EGM on February 19th and help progress your surf club.

Snappy snaps

By Local No Comments

We got sent in these pics from late 2014 by a keen photographer who apparently wishes to remain anonymous. Thanks for sending them in and we hope you keep them coming. Same goes for anyone else out there, if you’ve got snaps you want to share we’d love to see them.

Kev and Josh hit the Maldives

By Travel No Comments

Here’s a few shots from Kev Hinshaw and Josh Sexton’s recent trip to the Maldives. According to Kev it pumped  pretty much the whole time (as it has nearly all season this year in the Maldives). Unfortunately Kev wasn’t available to comment on the pics because he is off on another trip to Fuerteventura… living the dream! If any of you have any pics from recent trips please send them through to us and we will post them on the site.

It’s a wrap … well almost

By Events No Comments

After a fantastic weekend of surfing this at both Vazon Beach and T’Others we managed to complete The Longboarding, Masters and Open divisions. The standard was incredibly high across the board and the weekend culminated in a fantastic open final where Dan Hewlett, Johnny Wallbridge, Jake Warr and Tom Colley went toe-to-toe in pulsing 4ft T’Others. Just the Ladies and Veterans divisions to go now and then we will get a date in the diary for the presentation evening, when the winners will be announced. Until then watch this space.

After last year and the longest contest window in history we are trying to run this years Guernsey Surf Champs before the days get too short and the water gets too cold. This years comp will be run weekend beginning 20th/21st September. You have to be a member to compete but if you aren’t registered yet it’s not a problem as you can simply fill out the relevant parts of the contest registration form and join up at the same time, that way you’ll be able to enter all the other events that are on the cards for this year as well as benefiting from a years 3rd party insurance for when you are in the water.

_GENERIC-BANNER-BASE

Breda Surf Muratti

By Events No Comments

With the Guernsey Surf Champs just around the corner here’s a look back to the Breda Channel Islands Surf Muratti that took place in some pretty tiny conditions at St Ouens a few weeks back (all photos courtesy of Si English). Breda did the team proud, providing all the team members with a full kit bags worth of team clothing. Unfortunately Huey didn’t come up with the goods and the one to two foot ankle slappers left many of the competitors struggling. The format was simple enough, two Jersey surfers against two Guernsey surfers in each heat, the top two progressing, but points were allocated to the top three finishers which then went towards the team total. Although several of the Guernsey team progressed to the second round stage sadly none of us went any further and the Jersey boys (and girl) scored a resounding victory across the board. More than anything the flow and precision of their surfing highlighted the benefit of being able to surf small conditions on a regular basis on days where, if in Guernsey, it would simply be totally flat. Regardless of the result all agreed that the inter-insular scene is one that needs to be nurtured so look out for more of these events in the future.

After licking our wounds Team Guernsey headed back to the beach where we totally dominated the beach cricket … this was largely due to the fact that, apart from the Jersey teams’ resident bodyboarder Eduardo, only we took part! At the end of the day cricket was the winner and as the sun set we headed to Watersplash to help support our sponsors excellent product.

A massive thanks to Breda, the Jersey team for having us, Timmy G for judging, Stefan for the support and Johnny W for making it all happen.
