Unusual boards and great waves

By Events No Comments

Weird and wonderful crafts littered the shores of Perelle today as surfers gathered to take part in a charity event to support Autism Guernsey. The brain child of Will Jones the only criteria to enter was that you had to surf something out of the ordinary and boy were some of the boards out of the ordinary! When you throw these outlandish craft into the fairly solid swell that has pummelled our shores over the past 48 hours all hell tends to break loose and everyone who entered were battling both the conditions and their equipment. We ran two heats of 10 surfers with the emphasis on fun and four categories being judged: best wave, best manoeuvre, best wipeout and overall winner of each heat. After a great days surfing £260 was raised for Autism Guernsey. Special mention also needs to go out to Joseph Gaudion who took on some serious left handers on a board that can best be described as almost unridable. Thanks you to everyone who took part.

Results:

Heat 1

Winner – Gregg LeTissier

Best wave – Danny O’Hara

Best Manoeuvre – Chez Merrien

Best wipe out – Si Jackson

Heat 2

Winner – Jon Wallbridge

Best wave – Tom Colley

Best Manoeuvre – Will jones

Best wipe out – Tim Gaudion

Sea Fever

By Local 2 Comments

(altered, adapted and extended by Kevin Hinshaw with acknowledgement and due respect to John Masefield 1878-1967)

A Tribute to Keith Ogier- Surfer and Cobo man (and boy).

I must down to the seas again, to the glassy sea and the sky,
And all I ask is a surfboard and a skeg to steer her by,
And the rail’s chime and the waxed grip and the white waves breaking,
And a light offshore on the wave’s face, and waves there for just for the taking.

I must down to the seas again, for the call of the running tide
Is a wild call and a clear call that may not be denied;
And all I ask is a glassy day with my surfboard trimmed and sliding,
And the flung spray and the blown spume, and all the sea-gulls crying.

I must travel far seas again, to the vagrant gypsy life,
To the surfer’s way and the explorer’s way, where empty waves are rife;
And all I ask is a merry yarn from a laughing fellow-rover
And quiet sleep and a sweet dream when this long ride is over.

I must to our Surfer’s beach , sadly now washed away,

Where we’d BBQ and sing at night and sit and lie by day,

With long-boards high against the wall and us low to try to warm,

From too long riding chilly waves, sent forth from a far off storm.

I must to the seas again, to the lonely sea and sky,

To watch the surfers from the shore, and say a last goodbye.

To recall those heady days of youth, when life was just a game,

Surfing is still a special thing, but maybe not the same.

Oh to take down my board again, from its dusty rack,

And wax up and paddle out and sit right out the back;

And swing the board and paddle fast, as a wave doth hove,

And ride to shore hooting loud, into the reef’s alcove.

Pick up my board and sit by Jan, with my family and friends is best,

And watch the sun slip slowly to sleep, gently in the west.

By Events No Comments

Last weekend saw some pretty epic conditions and there was something for all ages to enjoy. Here’s the action from the final of the three Junior Series events which was held at Centres. Well done to all the kids who competed and enjoyed the fantastic conditions, and a massive thank you to our sponsors Swoffers. Here’s to bigger and better things next year.

Johnny conquers Croyde

By Events No Comments

As you will no doubt be aware the current Island Champ has now become the British Senior Champ as well. Johnny Wallbridge took out the title in pumping 4-6ft surf at Croyde Bay in Devon last weekend with Jersey’s Ben Chapman coming in 3rd. We’ll be running a full story with words from Johnny and pics and footage from Tim Gaudion soon but this vid from the organisers gives you a taste of the event.

Here are the results and then one more event to go which we will probably do alongside the Island Champs before we announce the overall winners and dish out the prizes, we’ll keep you all posted.
